Yard sales have been a tradition in my family since I was a little bitty girl. My mom & I LOVE to spend a couple of Saturdays together shopping at yard sales in town. Then, to make room for our new treasures, we sell our old things in a yard sale of our own! Over the years I have learned a few good tricks to having a profitable yard sale..
How to Make More $$$ at Your Yard Sale
1. Pick a color scheme
Using signs & labels with coordinating colors gives off a more professional feel.
2. Separate items by category
Dont pile all of your stuff together for the customer to sort through. Pre-sort your items according to category (clothing, shoes, books, toys, etc).
3. Highlight the best items
Dont leave the higher ticket items hiding in the back. Bring the electronics, strollers, and anything else that might bring more than $15 out where people can see them from the road.
4. Offer a Free Box
Offering things for free sounds counterproductive to the cause here, but I promise you that it works. When people see FREE they want to stop to go through that box. While sifting through the free stuff they usually spot something on a table or rack that they just have to buy as well!
5. Put a price on everything
When I am a customer at a yard sale I do not like to ask the seller about the price on their items. I want to be able to look at the item, see the price, and determine right away if I want to purchase it or not. For this reason you should have a price sticker on every item that you have for sale. If you want all of your shirts to be $1 then you can make a sign that says All Shirts $1 to avoid making a ton of $1 stickers. I like to use a color coded system for my prices and that seems to work well.
6. Use bold directional signs
In order for people to buy from you they have to be able to find you. Use bold directional signs that match your branding to guide people to your sale.
* It can be difficult for kids to let go of their old toys & clothes. Make decluttering a game for them and explain that their value isnt found in the items that they possess. This book can help guide the conversation if your kiddos are sad about selling things that are so familiar to them.
I created a branding kit last year to help boost the income produced in our garage/yard sale and I was surprised at how many compliments I received on my organization. I know that this kit was a huge help and I want it to help you as well!
